The Google smart contact lens has been designed to help check the sugar levels of diabetics. The biggest question regarding this contact lens is how will this be done? Well according to Google these smart contact lens will be able to test your glucose levels through your tears by means of a wireless chip, a miniaturised glucose sensor and an antenna.

How will it work? A very small hole in the lens will allow the tear to find its way to the miniaturised glucose sensor which will measure ones glucose levels. From there the information from the sensor will be sent to a device by means of the antenna. The antenna will decode and analyse the data so that the user will be able to understand the information on their devices. The user will also be able to set their maximum sugar level so that if that level is passed the user’s phone will get a notification explaining this situation regarding their sugar levels.

The physical components on this contact lens will not affect the eye as it is on the outer side of the contact lens and it is also surrounded by a few soft layers of lens material. Thus this contact lens is very safe to use. The smart contact lens may be upgraded in the future and will be able to measure a lot more than just glucose levels. The smart contact lens could one day end up helping blind people see, the possibilities are endless for this type of technology.

The Google Smart Contact Lens is a revolutionary invention due to its convenience and efficiency. In order to understand what makes it revolutionary, we need to understand how competitive products work and what makes the Google Smart Contact Lens the better option. Traditional methods of testing blood  glucose levels are normally kits which require a drop of blood being drawn, which is then placed onto a machine  and a reading is given with the necessary information about the blood glucose level of the patient. The Google Smart Contact Lens however is smaller and does not need to be carried as it fits directly into the eye of the user. It is also quicker and more accurate because it gives readings every second as opposed to twice a day . A major factor that seperates it from the traditional competitor is pain. Having to prick yourself every day is unpleasant and the Google Smart Contact Lens eliminates the pain factor by using tears . This makes it a more favourable choice for diabetic patients around the globe. Diabetes is a very common ailment, which can lead to other illnesses such as heart and liver disease . Google have teamed up with Novartis( pharmaceutical company ) to develop this invention .Novartis have expert knowledge about diabetes and methods of testing blood glucose levels being a leading producer of the more traditional machines. By these two companies working together we can expect an invention superior to if one company had to work on it because of the amount of resources both companies can provide.  This will help many diabetics keep their blood glucose levels in check and save many lives by being more convenient and efficient and limiting the pain factor.
